TikTok Shop Tax UK Guide: VAT, Income Tax and Bookkeeping for Sellers

Selling through TikTok Shop can produce rapid growth, but every order also creates tax and accounting records. UK sellers should monitor total turnover across all sales channels, separate gross sales from TikTok deductions and keep evidence for VAT, Income Tax or Corporation Tax.

This guide reflects key UK rules and thresholds available for the 2026 to 2027 tax year. Individual circumstances, residence and product VAT rates can change the treatment.

Does TikTok Shop Income Need to Be Declared?

Regularly buying or making goods to sell for profit is normally trading. If an individual’s combined gross trading income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, they may need to register for Self Assessment, even when profit is much lower. Selling unwanted personal belongings is usually different from trading.

The £1,000 trading allowance applies to gross trading income across relevant activities, not just one TikTok account. Eligible sole traders can generally deduct either the allowance or actual allowable expenses, so sellers with meaningful stock, advertising and platform costs will often benefit from claiming their actual costs.

Digital platform reporting does not create a new tax. Platform operators may collect seller details and report sales information to HMRC. For goods, the reporting exception generally applies only where a seller makes fewer than 30 sales and receives no more than €2,000 in the calendar year. A platform report can show proceeds after fees and does not replace the seller’s own records or tax calculation.

Sole Trader or Limited Company?

The business structure determines who reports the profit and how tax is paid.

StructureMain tax treatmentMain filings
Sole traderIncome Tax and Class 4 National Insurance on taxable profitSelf Assessment
PartnershipPartners pay tax on their allocated profitPartnership return and partner returns
Limited companyCorporation Tax on company profit, with separate tax considerations for salary and dividendsCompany accounts and Company Tax Return

For 2026 to 2027, the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, taxable non savings income is generally charged at 20%, 40% and 45% across the relevant bands. Scottish rates differ. Class 4 National Insurance is 6% on self employed profits between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above that level.

A company generally pays Corporation Tax at 19% where profits are £50,000 or less and 25% where profits exceed £250,000. Marginal Relief can apply between those limits, which may be reduced for short periods or associated companies.

VAT for TikTok Shop Sellers

A UK business must normally register for VAT when total taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12 month period, or when it expects turnover to exceed £90,000 within the next 30 days. This is not a calendar year test and it includes taxable sales from TikTok Shop and other channels operated by the same business.

Once registered, the seller must identify the correct VAT rate for each product. Some goods are standard rated, while others can be reduced rated or zero rated. Consumer prices are usually VAT inclusive, so VAT within a standard rated sale is extracted as follows:

Example: A standard rated item sells for £120 including VAT.

Output VAT: £120 ÷ 6 = £20

Net sale: £120 less £20 = £100

TikTok states that VAT can be included in the selling price without appearing as a separate line on its receipts or payout reports. Merchants remain responsible for their VAT calculation, while formal tax invoices may need to be created separately.

Voluntary registration below the threshold can help a seller recover eligible input VAT, but it also creates filing, pricing and record keeping duties. The commercial benefit depends on customer type, margins and the VAT status of suppliers.

Overseas Stock and Import VAT

Sellers importing goods need the correct commodity information, customs value and EORI details. Customs Duty may apply, while VAT registered businesses can use postponed VAT accounting to declare and recover eligible import VAT through the same VAT Return.

Special marketplace rules can apply to goods sold from overseas. For qualifying consignments worth £135 or less, the online marketplace may be responsible for VAT at the point of sale. Treatment depends on the seller’s establishment, the location of the goods, customer status and consignment value, so these transactions should not be assumed to follow ordinary UK stock rules.

Bookkeeping the TikTok Payout

The bank deposit is not normally the sales figure. TikTok settlement reports can contain net sales, refunds, shipping, platform commission, affiliate commission, subsidies, incentives and adjustments.

A simplified reconciliation may look like this:

EntryAmount
Sales after refunds£10,000
Platform and affiliate fees£1,300
Shipping and other adjustments£500
Bank settlement£8,200

The books should normally record £10,000 of sales and £1,800 of relevant costs, rather than recording only the £8,200 deposit as income. VAT registered sellers must also separate VAT correctly and retain platform service fee invoices where available.

A reliable monthly process should include:

  1. Export order, refund, settlement and fee reports from Seller Center.
  2. Match settlements to the business bank account.
  3. Post sales, refunds, shipping, commission, affiliate costs, discounts, subsidies and adjustments to separate accounts.
  4. Review VAT codes and investigate unmatched balances.
  5. Reconcile stock purchased, units sold, returns, damaged items and closing quantities.
  6. Save supplier invoices, customs documents and TikTok fee invoices.

Allowable Costs and Profit

Tax is normally based on taxable profit, not turnover and not the payout received. Common eligible costs may include stock for resale, packaging, postage, advertising, free samples, software, business phone use, payment charges and accountancy services, provided the normal business purpose rules are met.

Illustrative sole trader calculation

CalculationAmount
Sales after refunds£50,000
Stock and fulfilment£22,000
TikTok, affiliate and advertising costs£9,000
Other allowable costs£3,000
Estimated taxable profit£16,000

Assuming no other income and a full Personal Allowance, the illustrative 2026 to 2027 Income Tax is £686 and Class 4 National Insurance is about £206. The actual bill can change because of other income, reliefs, residence and payments on account.

Records, Deadlines and MTD

New Self Assessment users should normally notify HMRC by 5 October after the relevant tax year. Online returns and payment are generally due by the following 31 January. For 2025 to 2026, registration is due by 5 October 2026 and online filing and payment by 31 January 2027.

VAT registered businesses must maintain specified digital records and generally retain VAT records for at least six years. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies from 6 April 2026 to qualifying sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000, with the threshold reducing to above £30,000 from April 2027.

Common TikTok Tax Mistakes

  • Recording only the net payout as sales
  • Testing the VAT threshold once a year instead of using rolling turnover
  • Mixing personal spending with business transactions
  • Omitting refunds, affiliate commission, subsidies or fee VAT
  • Claiming all stock purchases without using a consistent accounting method
  • Losing import VAT statements and customs evidence
  • Treating HMRC platform reports as complete accounts

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TikTok deduct tax for UK sellers?

TikTok may deduct fees and can account for VAT in specific marketplace situations, but a normal UK seller remains responsible for business tax, VAT where applicable and accurate records.

Is tax calculated on TikTok sales or profit?

Income Tax and Corporation Tax are generally based on taxable profit. VAT registration is tested using taxable turnover, not profit.

Does the £1,000 allowance mean £1,000 of profit?

No. The registration test concerns gross trading income before expenses, and the allowance is subject to eligibility rules.

Should TikTok fees be recorded separately?

Yes. Separate posting makes settlement reconciliation, margin analysis and VAT treatment clearer.

Can a seller reclaim VAT on TikTok fees and stock?

A VAT registered seller may recover eligible input VAT when the supply supports taxable business activity and valid evidence is held. Restrictions can apply.

What records should a TikTok seller download?

Keep order, refund, settlement and fee reports, platform invoices, supplier invoices, bank records, stock records and customs documents.
