Influencer and Affiliate Commission Accounting: A Guide for UK Businesses

Influencer fees, affiliate rewards and TikTok Shop commissions can increase sales, but they can also hide the true cost of acquiring a customer. The accounting must separate gross sales, refunds, platform fees and promotional commission before profit can be measured properly.

For smaller sellers, VAT creates an added decision. Recovering input VAT may reduce the cost of eligible marketing services, but VAT registration can also create administration and squeeze consumer margins when prices cannot be increased. Compulsory registration normally applies when UK taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling twelve month period, while voluntary registration is possible below that level.

Identify the Cost First

The correct entry depends on who supplied the service and what the agreement covers.

CostTypical accounting categoryEvidence to retain
Fixed influencer campaign feeAdvertising or marketingContract, invoice, campaign brief and payment record
Affiliate payment linked to salesAffiliate commission or cost of saleAffiliate report, order data and invoice or self billed invoice
TikTok Shop platform commissionMarketplace feesTikTok settlement and fee invoice
Free product provided for agreed contentMarketing or barter arrangementCreator agreement, stock cost and evidence of content
Genuine product sample with no obligationSamples or promotional expenseDispatch record and purpose of sample

A genuine commercial marketing cost is normally deductible when incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade. HMRC applies this test to companies and unincorporated businesses, while advertising and marketing costs are recognised business expense categories.

Record Gross Sales

A TikTok settlement should not be posted as sales simply because it matches the bank receipt. The payout may already be reduced by refunds, affiliate commission, platform charges and other adjustments.

A sound reconciliation records:

  1. Gross customer sales
  2. Output VAT where applicable
  3. Refunds and discounts
  4. TikTok platform fees
  5. Affiliate and creator commission
  6. Other deductions
  7. The final amount paid to the bank

This approach keeps turnover complete and shows the real marketing cost. It also prevents commission from being netted against revenue, which can distort the VAT threshold, gross margin and channel performance.

Account for VAT Correctly

Input VAT is not recoverable merely because a payment relates to marketing. A VAT registered seller normally needs a valid VAT invoice and the service must be used for taxable business activity. The treatment usually follows these principles:

SituationLikely VAT position
UK creator is VAT registered and issues a valid VAT invoiceInput VAT may normally be reclaimed
UK creator is not VAT registeredNo input VAT should be claimed
TikTok or another platform charges UK VAT on its own feeReclaim may be available with valid evidence
Overseas business supplies marketing servicesThe UK seller may need to apply the reverse charge
Flat Rate Scheme appliesInput VAT is generally not reclaimed, apart from limited qualifying capital purchases

Services bought from an overseas supplier can fall under the reverse charge. As part of their ecommerce accounting, the business calculates UK VAT as though it supplied the service to itself and may reclaim the corresponding input VAT subject to the normal rules. Reverse charge services can also affect VAT registration calculations, so an unregistered seller should not ignore overseas advertising and commission costs.

Under the Flat Rate Scheme, purchase VAT is generally not recoverable except on certain capital assets costing at least £2,000 including VAT. Ecommerce sellers with substantial advertising and commission costs should compare the scheme with normal VAT accounting rather than assuming the simpler option is cheaper.

Test the Margin Impact

Consider a VAT registered seller with these figures for one campaign:

ItemAmount
Consumer sales collected£12,000
Output VAT within sales£2,000
Sales excluding VAT£10,000
Influencer invoice excluding VAT£1,000
Recoverable input VAT£200
Net campaign cost after VAT recovery£1,000

The £200 input VAT recovery helps cash flow, but it does not remove the £1,000 marketing cost. If the retailer previously sold an item for £120 while unregistered and keeps that consumer price after registration, net revenue falls to £100 before product cost, commission and fulfilment.

Before voluntary registration, compare:

  1. Input VAT available on stock, advertising, creator fees and platform charges
  2. The proportion of sales made to consumers who cannot recover VAT
  3. Whether retail prices can rise without reducing demand
  4. Ongoing software, bookkeeping and VAT return costs
  5. The effect on contribution margin by product and channel

Products Given to Creators

A product sent without any requirement for content may be a gift or genuine sample. Different VAT rules apply to products supplied in exchange for a post, video or live promotion because goods and promotional services may form a barter transaction with two supplies.

Where input VAT was recovered, gifts can create output VAT unless an exception applies. HMRC provides relief for qualifying samples and for business gifts costing no more than £50 excluding VAT to the same person over twelve months. The contract should therefore state whether the creator must deliver content, whether the product can be returned and how both sides value the arrangement.

Month End Checklist

  1. Export the complete TikTok settlement and affiliate reports
  2. Match commission to the related orders and refunds
  3. Separate platform fees from creator payments
  4. Confirm the supplier name, country and VAT status
  5. Collect valid invoices or maintain formal self billing agreements
  6. Post overseas services to the correct reverse charge codes
  7. Review campaign margin before increasing spend

Self billing can be useful where the seller calculates commission, but it requires the supplier’s agreement, correct invoices and supporting records. VAT can only be reclaimed from a compliant self billed invoice where the conditions are met.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a seller reclaim VAT on influencer fees?

Yes, if the seller is VAT registered, the service supports taxable business activity and a valid VAT invoice shows VAT charged by a VAT registered supplier. No input VAT is available where the creator is not VAT registered.

Should TikTok commission reduce sales income?

No. Gross sales and the related VAT should normally be recorded separately from platform and affiliate commission. The net payout is a settlement figure, not the complete sales value.

How are overseas influencer fees treated for VAT?

Business marketing services received from outside the UK commonly require reverse charge accounting. The exact result depends on the supplier, customer status, place of supply and right to recover input VAT.
